Memorial Weekend Ride 2021

It’s Memorial Day weekend!! The time to remember those that served and lost their lives for us to be able to be free. It’s one of those holiday’s that we all look forward to but we also always want to remember why we have a long weekend – we need to remember those that gave their lives for us.

We were up in Outing for the weekend and got in a little riding, as we tend to do. The weather was pretty typical in Minnesota for the holiday, we usually have the coldest weekend of the start to summer on Memorial Day. This year was so odd because we had the ice off our lakes in April – which is early for us – and we’ve had such nice weather in April and May. I never would have thought this would be one of those years where we would have such a cold Memorial weekend.

I had already planted my garden at home and where we were up north actually got down to 30 degrees Fahrenheit two of the nights we were up there! We have friends that live up there and they had to cover their garden and unfortunately lost a couple tomato plants even after covering them.

While it wasn’t the absolute best weather for boating it was perfect for riding out in the woods. We got out a couple times and even threw some flags on the machines to honor the day.

It was great riding weather up in Outing and other than it being a little chilly it was gorgeous outside! We went down a couple of our favorite trails in the area and thankfully my machine runs a little hot so I was just fine even when I was hit by the wind. There were so many machines that showed up on Saturday that looked like they trailered in for the day. It was the busiest I’ve seen Outing since we bought the place. I don’t remember the weekend being this busy last year but since the corona virus hit right around this time last year I remember that everything was closed for Memorial Weekend last year. I think folks were hesitant to come out around that time which is why it was so quiet.

We bought our cabin in the fall of 2019 so last year was the first Memorial Day for us up there. Since it was so busy on the trails we decided to do other things during the day. It was great because we had friends that were up in the Brainerd area riding and they happened to stop at a restaurant that was near us so we drove over to meet them for a late lunch. It was so nice to see all the folks we haven’t seen in a while and we can’t wait to plan trips together this summer and go riding.

We decided that we would go out for a couple rides after the folks that were visiting the area might be off the trails. It was just me and my husband this weekend and it seemed a little safer to go out once the crowds died down for us. We took a couple of rides over the weekend after dinner time and it was beautiful – dusty… but beautiful.

We have friends up there that were having a garage sale the entire weekend so we ended up stopping by there at the end of their sale everyday and chatting and hanging out and meeting new folks and then leaving from their place to go for a quick ride. It was a super fun weekend and since we were avoiding all the busy areas in town we stayed in a lot of the nights, cooked dinner and sat by the fire with the doggo. Even though we didn’t get the summer weather we were hoping for it was perfect for everything we go to do this weekend!
