Riding Near Wahkon MN
When my husband first got his side by side it was February. I remember that he got it on a Saturday and we immediately took it out onto Coon Lake. Now I know what you might be thinking – how crazy were we to go riding out on a lake in February in Minnesota? Well pretty typical of Minnesota you never really know what the weather was going to do and it happened to be 45 degrees Fahrenheit that day and sunny. It was a beautiful day to be out playing around in the new toy on the frozen lake. It was a blast and we actually had some friends out that day to join us. Ever since my husband got his Polaris General we’ve been hooked on riding.
One of the best things about this hobby for me is that it gets us out into nature. I love that it gets us out of the house – away from the TV and everything that you can possibly stream these days. We get to go to really cool places and spend time with friends, listen to music and see parts of the country that you can only see in a side by side or ATV.
We went to the Wahkon area a lot when my husband first got his General. It was a really close drive for us that we could do on a Saturday or Sunday just for the day. It was a perfect thing to do when we first got his machine because any time it rained in the summer and it wasn’t a great boating weekend at least we could go riding.
We have friends that live up in the Mille Lacs area and that was another reason that we went riding up there a bit. Also our friend’s parents lived up there and on one of their very few free days they met us up there to do a little riding. The nice thing about this area is that you can hop on the Soo Line – which is an old railroad bed and it can take you anywhere! It can even take you up to Duluth! It’s flat and long and can be pretty dusty.
There are a lot of trails that you can get to up in this area. We would go riding on the Solana Loop a lot, we would also hit up the Red Top Trails. We would got from Onamia to Isle on occasion as well. Since the trails aren’t really by anything we would often pack a lunch and head down the trails and stop once we got hungry.
There are bars and restaurants that you can stop at if you go down the Soo Line and get off in one of the towns. We would go to the Isle Muni on occasion and play some pulltabs. One of the times we stopped there we ran into an old coworker of mine – it’s funny how small of a world it is in Minnesota sometimes.
The nice thing about this area for us was that it was close enough to do a day trip. We would only have to trailer the machine for about 45 mins to an hour to go get on some really fun and really beautiful trails. We also got to go to Mille Lacs on occasion when the weather was nice enough.
